Mark H. Sobel, co-managing partner of the law firm, Greenbaum, Rowe, Smith, & Davis LLP with offices in Roseland and Woodbridge, NJ, was selected by the New Jersey State Bar Association’s Family Law Section to receive the 2009 Saul A. Tischler Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the practice of family law.
Mr. Sobel received this prestigious lifetime achievement award at a dinner ceremony on May 5, 2009 at the Pleasantdale Chateau in West Orange. The Tischler award recognizes Mr. Sobel’s substantial impact on both the development of family law and the profession.
Mr. Sobel is the chair of the Family Law Practice Group at Greenbaum, where he is also a member of the Litigation Department. A past chair of the Executive Committee of the Family Law Section of the New Jersey State Bar Association, he is a member of the New Jersey Supreme Court Special Committee to Revise Matrimonial Law. Mr. Sobel has been a member of New Jersey Family Lawyer Editorial Board for 22 years serving as an editor for three years, as a managing editor for eight years, and as Editor-In- Chief for the past 10 years. He has represented the New Jersey State Bar Association before the New Jersey Supreme Court, and is a frequent lecturer on a wide variety of continuing legal education programs including the Family Law Symposium and the Family Law Summer Institute. Mark currently co-chairs, for the past 5 years, the Family Law Summer Institute.
As a member of the Executive Committee, Mr. Sobel has testified before the New Jersey Legislature on various legislative initiatives including mandatory economic mediation, no-fault divorce and amendments to the domestic violence statute. He has represented, as counsel, the New Jersey State Bar Association before the New Jersey Supreme Court on issues dealing with termination of parental rights.
Mr. Sobel has been a member of the Essex County Family Law Executive Committee for 16 years and was one of the founders of the Essex County Early Settlement Program. He received the Family Law Attorney Achievement Award from the Essex County Bar Association for his efforts.
Mr. Sobel is a certified matrimonial lawyer and has been voted one of New Jersey’s “Best Lawyers” annually for the past 10 years. He has also been recognized as one of the top 100 New Jersey “Super Lawyers”. He is one of Court TV’s local experts on family law and has lectured throughout the country on family law topics. In an article appearing in the New Jersey Law Journal, Mr. Sobel remarked, “…the award is the most meaningful in my career.”
Mr. Sobel began his career as an Assistant Prosecutor for Essex County before joining Greenbaum, Rowe, Smith, & Davis in 1980. He was born and raised in Livingston, New Jersey where he currently resides with his wife of 31 years, Wendy.
